Where Does Cold Air Come From?

Where does cold air come from? It's a very simple question and it actually has a very simple answer. It comes from up north. The tilt of the earth puts the North Pole away from the sun during the winter season.

This leaves much of the arctic in total darkness for most of the winter season. This position will peak on the Winter Solstice on December 21st and then the arctic will see more and more sunlight to warm the temps. However, this moderation doesn't happen fast, with all that ice and snow cover reflecting most of the sun's rays back into space.

Once the "Great North" is plunged into darkness, there is no longer an ability to absorb any heat from the sun. In fact, any heat stored up there during the summer months is loss to space with no new warmth replacing it. This forms a stockpile of cold air, just waiting to shoot down south on the next perfectly positioned wind.

During our summer months the South Pole gets it's turn in the dark, hence winter down under.
