BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (KMSP) -

Police have arrested a man suspected of impersonating a police officer in the sexual assault of a woman in Fridley, Minn., last month.

Gideon Charles Arrington II, 35, was arrested at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday on the 8000 block of Brooklyn Boulevard in Brooklyn Center, Minn. Detectives from the Anoka Hennepin Narcotics and Violent Crimes Task Force made the arrest at Arrington's home.

Arrington was charged Thursday in Anoka County with three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of kidnapping. If convicted, Arrington could face up to 30 years in prison. Bail has been set at $1 million.

Investigators initially believed the same suspect was responsible for a similar sexual assault of a University of Minnesota student just 12 hours later, but Minneapolis police spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington on Thursday confirmed there is no evidence at this time to link the U of M area case to the Fridley assault suspect.

Investigators in the Minneapolis case are awaiting results from evidence that is being tested at the crime lab.

COMPLAINT DETAILS TERRIFYING ABDUCTION

The charges against Arrington accuse him of claiming to be a detective when he approached a woman in a Fridley Parking lot. The woman, who worked as personal care assistant nearby, told police that she didn't think anything of their initial interaction and went about her errands, but when she got back, she said Arrington came up from behind, forced her into his vehicle and threatened to shoot her if she didn't do what she was told.

Investigators say Arrington blindfolded and cuffed the victim, took her to an unknown location, and raped her not once, but twice. After each assault, Arrington scrubbed the victim's body with a bleach-like solution and washed her clothes, the complaint alleges.

The criminal complaint states the woman was held for several hours before Arrington forced her back into his vehicle, gave her $2, and told her to take the bus home after dropping her off in Brooklyn Center.

Instead, the victim frantically flagged down a cab and asked the driver to call police. She was then taken to a nearby hospital for testing.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was able to match her swabs with Arrington's DNA, which was already in their CODIS system because of his criminal background, which includes violent felonies.

Police acted quickly. After the match was made on Tuesday, police met Arrington as he left his Brooklyn Park home and took him into custody.

Arrington is expected to make his first court appearance on Jan. 6, and is expected to enter a formal plea at that time. Right now, he is denying posing as a cop or raping anyone.
