Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks This Weekend

Posted: Updated:

Don't let the cold stop you from checking out one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year. The forecast is calling for a slight warm up and a chance of snow this Saturday, so a break in the clouds will hold off until Sunday. The moon will be bright in the sky, but so will these meteors. You can expect to see up to 120 per hour during the peak of the annual Geminid meteor shower this Friday the 13th and again on Saturday. A few days before and after the peak dates will also offer some good chances of catching these meteors.

The constellation Gemini rises in the east and will be far enough above the horizon by the peak viewing time between midnight and dawn. The illustration below highlights where to look for the source of the meteors.

Looking anywhere will give you a glimpse of these impressive streaks of light. Give yourself at least an hour as it generally takes about 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust.

Meteors come in spurts, often follow by lulls, so be patient. Enjoy and stay warm.
