MESA, Ariz. -

A suspect has been arrested in the death of a 14-year-old Mesa girl who was sexually assaulted, strangled and dumped in a trash container, police said Tuesday.

Alex Anthony Madrid, 31, was being held without bond on suspicion of first-degree murder, sexual conduct with a minor and multiple other charges, according to Mesa police.

The judge also ordered that a lawyer be appointed to represent Madrid. Police have said he refused to talk to detectives about the death of Claudia Ann Lucero, whose body was found Friday.

Mesa Police Chief Frank Milstead said Madrid was identified days ago as a "person of interest" in the case and was linked by DNA and other forensic evidence.

According to Mesa police, the probable cause of death was strangulation.

Milstead said he wants Maricopa County prosecutors to seek the death penalty.

Madrid previously dated the girl's mother and had lived at the family's home at one time, according to police.

"Over the past some weeks, he had been estranged from the family," Milstead said. "It was known to detectives that Claudia was afraid of Alex. He had inappropriately touched her, on occasion."

The body was found early Friday by two women digging through the trash container for aluminum cans at the Sun Garden Apartments. Police said the girl was identified Monday.

There was also a gray colored rug found in the same dumpster that police say matches the interior of Madrid's trunk--which appears to be missing a rug.

Madrid, a construction worker, originally was arrested on a probation violation and other charges last Friday. Milstead said police wanted to keep Madrid off the streets until investigators could determine if he was linked to the teen's killing.

The girl was last seen at her home at 6:30 a.m. Thursday and didn't make it to Westwood High School that day, police said. Her mother filed a missing-persons report that night.

Madrid faces charges of first degree murder, kidnapping, sexual conduct with a minor, molestation of a child, child abuse, sexual abuse, abandonment and tampering with physical evidence.

Madrid: No stranger to the criminal justice system

The man accused of this crime has a long list of convictions going back well over a decade.

Madrid has been charged with dozens of crimes in the past 13 years -- some of his most notable convictions:

2000 - he was convicted of burglary
2007 - he was convicted of aggravated assault
2008 and 2012 - he was convicted of aggravated harassment, which is intentionally taking actions to intimidate or terrorize.

He was picked up on Friday on a probation violation, not the murder because police wanted him off the streets until they built their case against him.

In a video, Madrid was seen tying to tell a judge he is not a flight risk -- and remember, police say less than 24 hours before this, he allegedly murdered 14-year-old Claudia Lucero.

"I have a great job, I work my butt off.. I have children to take care of, all my ties are here in Arizona, there's no reason to believe that I would not show up for court.  I have no failure to appears, I've always shown up to court, despite any of the things that were going on in my past, I've always stood up and took responsibility for what was going on," said Madrid.

"You have another problem -- you are on probation," said the judge, who did not let Madrid out.

Madrid is being held without bond on first degree murder charges.
