Don't let the "fruit" in fruitcake fool you

Known for it's long shelf life, Roman soldiers used to carry fruitcake to the battlefield. Now, centuries later, the Christmas staple lives on but is there anything healthy about the heavy loaf?

Providence Park registered dietitian Emily Schwartz says usually the fruit inside the cake isn't real fruit. "Usually its dried, sugared fruit, candied fruit, or just bits of candy, so usually not as healthy as it sounds."

In fact according to TLC, the decadent, dense cake was outlawed in the 18th century Europe for being sinfully rich. That hasn't changed - Schwartz calls it a calorie bomb! She says one slice can hold up to 400 calories.

If you're a fruitcake lover you can make some substitutions to make it healthier for you. Add real fruit instead, take out some of the sugar, and replace the oil with applesauce or mashed banana.
