Man Helps Homeless Through Series Of Warm Kindness

CHICAGO, IL -

A Chicago one man is stepping out to make sure the city's most needy have some warmth as the temperature is cooling down.

Gerrard McClendon goes beyond words when it comes to caring about the homeless. He goes to the back of his car where he keeps a stash of items to help.

"You got people out here who are homeless. People who are going to be freezing tonight. Who just needs someone that cares," McClendon said.

It's a mission that started about six months ago, he says, after leaving a church outing at navy pier.

"I think the impetus was just seeing people actually living on the street, it's like you've got to be kidding me," McClendon said.

So on cold nights, McClendon goes out looking for homeless people who might appreciate something to keep them a bit warmer. His philosophy is simple. He says the key is to just keep stuff in your car, so that, so that you're ready when you do see someone.

McClendon also offers the homeless a dose of dignity often giving out hugs. He is making a difference one pair of socks, and one pair of gloves at a time.
