Weather Channel seeks tax breaks for planned expansion

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

The Weather Channel says it needs tax breaks to expand its Cobb County headquarters. The talks come on the heels of the county's deal with the Atlanta Braves to build a new stadium in the area.

Email show the cable network has assigned for tax breaks in order to expand its headquarters. The planned expansion could cost $90 million. In one email, a company executive said that the county had not provided "compelling incentives for us to stay in Cobb County."

County officials would not comment on the talks.

In a statement, The Weather Channel said  it has been happy in Cobb but significant investment is required to stay in its current location.

Lisa Cupid , the sole Cobb County commissioner who voted against the Braves' deal, told FOX 5's Paul Yates that The Weather Channel's requirements are "not unreasonable given the agreement with the Braves."

The Weather Channel wants to invest in newsroom and studio expansion as well as a parking facility at its headquarters.
