Police: Suicidal West Bloomfield man shot during traffic stop

Posted: Updated:

A West Bloomfield man is in serious condition after police opened fire on him during a traffic stop. Police tell Fox 2 the incident happened near Cora Street and Jefferson Avenue.

Police say the victim emerged from his car with a handgun. The officer felt threatened and shot him. Police now believe the victim was trying to end his own life, driving erratically hoping to commit suicide by cop.

"No one wants to ever do it. You're prepared, you train, but you hope you make your 25 years and not have to ever do it," River Rouge Police Chief Jeff Harris says.

Harris says his officer was forced to pull the trigger, part of a larger plot from a man who police say wanted to die.

Around 1:30 Tuesday morning a man described as well-off professional from the auto industry brandished a handgun to a police officer during a traffic stop. The West Bloomfield man was shot three to four times.

"He stopped the vehicle. The lone occupant, the driver, exited with a handgun and was subsequently shot by the officer," Harris explains.

He was rushed to the hospital in serious but stable condition. Police say for the entire ride the man was asking to die.

"It looks like the suspect was suicidal," Harris says.

The officer is on paid administrative leave until Mchigan State Police complete their investigation. No word if any charges will be filed against the West Bloomfield professional.
