NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Snowy owls have hit five planes at Kennedy, Newark Liberty, and LaGuardia airports in the past two weeks, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which has taken action to get rid of the birds.

The Daily News reported that the PA had begun hunting the birds, but in a statement released Monday night the agency said it was working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to "trap and relocate" snowy owls that pose a threat to the planes at its airports.

The Port Authority's goal is to strike a balance in humanely controlling bird populations at and around the agency's airports to safeguard passengers on thousands of aircrafts each day," the PA said in the statement. It added that snowy owls appear to be migrating to the region in "far higher than typical numbers this year."

Snowy owls, typically two feet tall, normally live in northern regions such as the Arctic, but have been seen to migrate to the lower 48 states, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
