COLD SPRING, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 47-year-old Poughkeepsie man has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an 11-hour standoff at a Putnam County motel.

State police say Mark Reid of Poughkeepsie died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Troopers had been called to the Countryside Motel on Route 9 in Cold Spring for a report of an armed man barricaded in a room.

Troopers say Reid was alone in a motel room and it was never a hostage situation. The motel was evacuated for safety reasons as crisis negotiators from state police and the Putnam County Sheriff's Office tried to talk Reid into surrendering.

The officers maintained contact with Reid until he shot himself Sunday morning.
