Stop and frisk a dilemma for Bratton as NYPD head

NEW YORK (AP) - William Bratton will find a very different NYPD than the one he led nearly 20 years ago.

Crime has fallen to record lows. The nation's largest police force now has a large counterterrorism unit born after the Sept. 11 attacks.

And stop-and-frisk, which Bratton has used at every stop in his decorated career, has come under sharp criticism.

One of those critics is Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio, who appointed Bratton police commissioner on Thursday.

De Blasio believes stop-and-frisk unfairly targets minorities and has hurt police-community relations.

He also says he believes Bratton is the right man to keep crime low while repairing those bonds.

The tactic's supporters believe it drives down crime.

Bratton believes stop-and-frisk should be used in moderation. He said the distrust of police "can be corrected."

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
