Low pay debate: Should the minimum wage be raised?

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The biggest protest yet in the fight over minimum wage is set for Thursday. Workers in a hundred cities will walk of the job and at least eight locations in Chicago have been targeted for protests.

It's a movement that's been building for about a year and has faced stiff opposition from restaurant owners every step of the way.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, or about $15,000 a year. Illinois workers do a little better, making a minimum wage of $8.25 an hour. But protesters say that's not nearly enough to survive on. They want the minimum boosted all the way to $15 an hour.

Restaurant groups say that would make it impossible for many owners to stay in business, and would lead to layoffs and higher prices.

Janah Bailey works at McDonald's and Wendy's restaurants in the city. She earns minimum wage and will be part of the Thursday protest.

On the other side, Jonathan Hoenig is a portfolio manager at Capitalist Pig and calls himself an "advocate for capitalism."

Both Bailey and Hoenig joined FOX 32 News to discuss both sides of the issue.
