EMU student hit by stray bullet in her off-campus apartment

(WJBK) -

Destinee Leapheart says she was asleep Tuesday when she was awakened by a "popping" noise. That noise was a gun that was fired outside her apartment, and she was hit in the shoulder by a stray bullet that came through her bedroom wall.

Her roommate called 911. Destinee was taken to the hospital where she continues to recover.

"I didn't know if there was going to be more shots being fired; I didn't know if somebody was intentionally shooting at me or what was going on," Destinee says.

Destinee is the latest victim in a string of EMU students affected by off-campus violence. EMU football player Demarius Reed was murdered in his off-campus apartment building during what police call a robbery gone wrong, and Julia Niswender was murdered more than a year earlier in the same apartment building where Destinee was shot, the Peninsular Place complex.

Wiley reports the university is hiring more police officers, beefing up patrols in problem areas and working with apartment buildings to improve off-campus security. The university has offered both Destinee and her roommate a dorm room on campus.
