CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A big supermarket shake-up seals the fate of 11 Chicago-area Dominick's stores.

On Monday, the parent company of Mariano's Fresh Market announced it will be buying the stores and converting them starting early next year.

The announcement caught employees, customers and even this store owner by surprise. Now, they are all trying to figure out what this will mean for their shopping experience and their paychecks. For employees, there is no guarantee they will get to keep their jobs when Mariano's takes over.

"Hopefully not too many people will be let go," shopper Jose Flores says. "Jobs are valuable right now and I just hope, I'm really concerned more for the people who work here than anything else."

Employees are being told that they will be given a chance to interview for positions with Mariano's, but there is no certainty that they will keep their jobs. It's a tough prospect during the holidays.

"I feel sorry for the people that's gonna lose their jobs because it's hard out here," says Charnette Walker.

Mariano's parent company, Milwaukee-based Roundy's, signed a $36 million deal to buy the 11 Dominick's stores and will begin converting them in January. In a statement Roundy's said Dominick's employees will have to be interviewed, hired and trained for any positions with Mariano's.

Some shoppers are also feeling a bit unsure about losing a store they have become so familiar with over the years.

"It will be a change, but it will be sad also to see Dominick's leave, just because you're so used to coming here and you already know the employees," says Ineka Almenza.

For others though, the change is being welcomed with open shopping bags.

"I was hoping this was going to be one of the sites because I live literally two blocks away and I always have to drive to Mariano's and I just think it's gonna be great for the neighborhood," Polly Mulhearn tells FOX 32.

"I'll probably try it out see if I like it, and if I do I'll probably continue, but I'm really sad to see Dominick's go," Lisette Craft adds.
