Veteran Marine Gunned Down in Camden, Father Speaks Out

CAMDEN -

"I'm so proud of my son he did so much. He's not only my son, he's my best friend and my hero."

That's how Timothy Loper Sr. will always remember his son. Timothy Loper Jr. was a father, a brother, and a son and a veteran Marine who served his country with two tours in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia.

He came through those dangerous assignments only to lose his life on the streets of Camden early Sunday morning. His dad spoke exclusively Monday with FOX 29.

"Tore the heart out of our whole family man we're trying our best to cope with it," Loper Sr. said at his home on Morton Street.

A surveillance video was taken from a bar at Second and Spruce Streets before Loper Jr. was gunned down trying to break up a fight in the parking lot. Police say the man in the video is a person of interest in Loper's murder. The 27-year-old marine was shot at least three times and pronounced dead at the scene.

"He's always been a peacekeeper, center of attraction do what's right for him and his family. Did right for everyone," Loper Sr. said.

Loper Jr. is the 50th murder victim in Camden so far this year. Police recovered at least four shell casings in the parking lot of the 20 Horse Tavern. There is a bank of surveillance cameras that ring the exterior and interior of the bar.

"Did his little tour in Afghanistan, made it through that, but couldn't make it through the streets of Camden. It's a shame," he said.

Loper has ten brothers and sisters. He's also survived by his five year old daughter. A family member told FOX 29, explaining her father's violent death to his daughter will be difficult, especially given the fact that he survived seven years in the Marine Corp.

"Anyone that's around him always got the love that he always shared with everyone," Loper Sr. added. "We're asking the public out there if they have any information, anything that can help us at all, please come out and help us."

Police have no suspects, anyone with information is asked to call the Camden County Prosecutor's Office or the Camden County Metro Police.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
