Basketblog: Wolves woes and a Breakdown preview

Posted: Updated:

The Wolves lost three of four this past week falling to Indiana, Denver and Oklahoma City while defeating Dallas on the road. The biggest head scratcher came Wednesday night at home against the Nuggets. Ty Lawson led 8 players Nuggets in double figures with 23 points.

Wolves:

After the game, Denver forward Kenneth Faried claimed the Nuggets knew the Wolves feet were slow while Wolves reserve guard J.J. Barea stated the obvious that the Wolves don't have a bench.

Can we build a rivalry?:

Sunday night, they were bullied in the fourth quarter against the Thunder who despite leading by 11 and playing against the Wolves bench didn't sub their starters until 30 seconds later and two Russell Westbrook three pointers.

Gopher Men's Basketball:

After dropping two games in Maui, (Syracuse and Arkansas), the Gophers needed a late run to defeat Chaminade 83-68. The next seven games will be played at Williams arena and the play of the guards and the interior defense needs serious work before Michigan comes to the Barn on January 2nd.

Senior Malik Smith stepped up and produced off the bench for the Gophers. Before the trip to Maui, head coach Richard Pitino had said that Smith was trying to find his role for the team after being "the guy" at Florida International. He responded by shooting 8-for-19 from three point range and averaging just under 16 points in the three games.

The Gophers play Florida State in the ACC-BIG 10 Challenge Tuesday night beginning at 8:30.
