Johns Creek teen lucky to be alive after coyote encounter

Posted: Updated:
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -

A 16-year-old girl is thankful to be alive and at home with her parents after a frightening experience involving a coyote near her Johns Creek home.

Bill DeMartino says his daughter was out for a late-night jog with her dog when she ran into a wild coyote roaming through the neighborhood.  He says at first, his daughter thought the animal looked like a German Shepherd, but it had no collar on.  Then, the animal started running after her and her dog, Calvin.

DeMartino says the coyote wrestled with the dog, and as they struggled, the teenager took out her cell phone and hit the coyote with it on the head.  Then, she ran to a neighbor's house for help.

Luckily, neither the girl nor her dog were hurt.  DeMartino says he went to pick up his daughter, and the coyote approached their car.

"I kid you not, it was like a movie," he recalled.

DeMartino says he thanks God that his daughter is okay, and he wants others to know about the close encounter.  He says from now on, his daughter won't be running at night.
