After going into overtime twice in two weeks and finally walking away with a win, things appear to be improving for the Vikings -- and the team will take a big step forward when they break ground on their new stadium on Tuesday.
The work will begin on Monday as construction crews begin removing the parking lot on the east end of the stadium -- where a lot of the VIP parking is found -- just after sun-up. It won't take long before a lot of changes will build up.
At Sunday's game, it was almost as though the reaper was standing at the door of the Metrodome because the wrecking equipment was already waiting. Yet, many fans told Fox 9 News they're ready for the change.
"I think we need something upgraded," Heather Drakula said. "I've gone to a couple of other stadiums and seen 'em, but I definitely think we need something new and bring people back to Minnesota to see the Vikings play."
To more games are still set to be held in the Metrodome, but that won't stop the shovels. Crews will begin by excavating the far corner, and will haul away dirt nearly every day for the next 4 months. A new visualization released by Mortensen Construction shows how the Metrodome will be taken down in sections, and the new stadium will go up incrementally in their place -- atop the old foundation.
The new stadium will be anchored in the existing east parking lot, which is why crews plan to start there; however, it will take many months before the superstructure of the stadium starts to take form. Even so, many fans say they are eager to see it take shape.
"I like the openness that it shows -- bigger concourses, bigger bathrooms, better atmosphere," said season ticket holder Tom Bauer.
When the groundbreaking takes place on Tuesday morning, a limited number of tickets will be made available to the public beginning at 9 a.m. before the 10 a.m. ceremony.
Demolition of the Metrodome begins in January. The Vikings will open their 2014 season at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus, and they will play there until construction on the new stadium is completed in July of 2016.
