South Alabama dominates Georgia State 38-17

ATLANTA (AP) - Ross Metheny connected with Shavarez Smith ten times for 194 yards and one touchdown as South Alabama dominated Georgia State 38-17 Saturday.

Metheny threw for 280 yards. Jay Jones scored two touchdowns and had 102 yards rushing on 17 carries as South Alabama (5-6, 3-3 Sun Belt Conference) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead. Jones had both rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. The Jaguars led 24-3 at the half.

Metheny hit Smith with a 37-yard scoring strike early in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 31-3. Ronnie Bell scored from the 1 for Georgia State (0-12, 0-7) with 7:37 remaining in the third, making the score 31-10. The Jaguars closed out that period with a 65 yard drive, capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Kendall Houston.

South Alabama entered the game needing two victories to become bowl eligible. The Jaguars play Louisiana-Lafayette next week.
