Delaware Mall Goes Dark During Black Friday Shopping

Posted: Updated:
NEWARK, Del. -

At the Christiana Mall, turkey couldn't keep these bargain-hunters asleep for very long.

Dawn Rogers, of Ocean City, Md., got up at the crack of dawn for tax-free clothing and Black Friday madness.

Asked if she came out at 6 a.m. just for the sweater she was carrying, she said, "I did. I did just to have fun, really."

Fun was also the reason Chase Wall and his mom wanted to wait in line at the Apple Store.

Wall, of Middletown, Del., said they were there "just to see if they have deals," not for anything specific.

It was steep discounts at JCPenny's that made Leslie Iannicelli sprint to the stores.

"They had a lot of jewelry on sale, like $1.97," she said.

Some shoppers were left in the dark during a 45-minute partial power outage.

"It was OK," Rogers said of the incident. "You know what? We have to take everything in stride. If you're going to come out on Black Friday, you gotta be aware that things are going to happen."

Mall staff said it's hard to estimate just how many people were there handing over their credit cards. And while it has been crowded, shoppers said it has been pretty tame.

"I think it's been great. I'm surprised that it wasn't really too bad at all," Iannicelli said.

But over at Kohl's in Newark, what a different story.

"It's really picking up. But I was out earlier at 5:45 a.m. It was very light," said Cynthia Bray, of Delaware.

She believes people went home and crashed from all the Thanksgiving Day door-busters.

"Probably they were tired from being in the sales last night since they started on Thanksgiving Day," Bray said.

It's a dash for discounts that never seems to go out of style, FOX 29's Leigh Scheps reported.
