Small businesses take ‘anti-madness' approach to Black Friday

While the malls and big box stores were luring crowds with doorbuster sales, many "small businesses" were trying to take advantage of people's penchant for Black Friday shopping as well.

Black Friday does not hold the same significance for small businesses as it does for the other larger retailers — they aren't competing for the same shopping dollars.

But boutiques also don't shy away from taking advantage of the spending bug that many people catch the day after Thanksgiving.

The buzz of business - boutique style, a much different feel than the feverish frenzy of the malls.

But holiday music nonetheless to the ears of the small store owners who also want to cash in on the season a day before their own special day designed to encourage people to spend big by shopping small.

"Tomorrow is small business Saturday and that is, we think, a really important day because we want small businesses to stay open and tomorrow we're doing 20 percent off for one day only off of clothing," said Esther Fishman, owner of Art Effect.

For some the address for holiday shopping heaven is on Armitage.

"I think we kinda deliberately stayed away from the mall, we didn't have any specific places we really wanted to be but Armitage is just kinda nice because it's just easy around here, you can get coffee, stores aren't too crazy," said shopper Matt Cermak.

The Small Business Administration says Chicago has thousands of smaller stores and shops whose owners try to stand out with service and unique items not found everywhere.

This was the first Black or Royal Friday for the owner of Young Royal Couture.

"I feel it's had a great impact, on my business, being brand new you expect to have tremendous sales for Black Friday and I think I've achieved my goals so far," said Erica James, owner of Young Royal Couture.

Next door, Epitome's owner used Instagram to tout her sales.

"Just posted that we're having a $28 sale today and people were outside at noon when I opened," said Laricia Chandler.

For some customers the small shopping experience is just more pleasant.

"It's not as crowded, which is good and there's a lot of variety and I'm able to interact with the people in the store and they're able to help me quickly, instead of the long wait," said shopper Jasmine Carpenter.

The small business push continues tomorrow with the tradition that started three years ago called "Small Business Saturday."
