It's a very special Thanksgiving for the Guske Family in Lakewood and Mar Yvette is spending the morning with them. PJ and Julie Guske are a happily married (Caucasian) couple with three children ages 18, 20 and 23. But this year the family has grown to five children - the couple adopted two-year old African American twins, one boy (Henry) and one girl (Grace). The Guskes knew it would be a big life change, so they made sure the entire family agreed with the decision. Adoption was finalized last month in October.
Throughout the process of fostering and adoption, the family worked with Olive Crest, a national non-profit for abused and neglected children. In addition to there being a shortage of foster families in Los Angeles, there is a disproportionate amount of African American children in foster care.
This November will be their first Thanksgiving as an official adoptive family, which happens to be National Adoption Awareness Month
