SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Investigators believe careless cooking is to blame for a fire at Providence Tower Apartments in Southfield that left 24 families homeless. Residents say no alarms went off, they were warned about the fire by neighbors.

The fire started on the 7th floor around 1am Sunday. Witnesses say it was hard to see through the smoke as they fled their apartments. People banged on each others doors to let neighbors know they needed to get out. In all, two dozen families are displaced because of smoke and water damage.

The Southfield Fire Dept. tells us a pump was frozen, making it difficult to fight the fire upon arrival. No one from the apartment building was available to speak with Fox 2 about the fire or whether the building is up to code but residents complained that smoke alarms did not sound and fire extinguishers are expired. Twelve tenants have been relocated to vacant apartments in the building, others are staying with family members.

No injuries are reported.
