Police Officer Helps Deliver Baby In Taxi's Back Seat

A police officer makes a stop he'll never forget! He helped a woman who gave birth in the back of a cab Friday morning in Center City.

Kimberly Anderson says she woke up and started having contractions. So, she hailed a cab to get to the hospital.

But the baby didn't want to wait. She delivered her son all by herself in the backseat near Broad Street and Fairmount Avenue.

She says the cab driver was stunned.

"I pulled my pants down," Anderson said. "He's like, 'No, don't pull your pants down!' I'm like, 'No, baby here!' He turned around, he's like, 'Oh!' His eyeballs got real big, like, 'Oh, baby.'"

"It was like two to three pushes, and it was like he was here," Anderson said.

But she immediately knew something was wrong. The newborn, who initially had been crying, stopped.

Philadelphia Police Officer Gary Kustra was flagged down by the taxi cab's driver at Broad and Spring Garden streets.

"I opened the car door up, and then baby had his head tilted down away from the seat. So I immediately picked him up, and I noticed he wasn't breathing correctly."

Kustra cleared baby Sadeem's nose and mouth, and it was music to mom's ears when he started crying again.

Mom and baby are doing just fine after a very eventful day.
