Firefighters' Union Accuses Commissioner Of Perjury

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The Philadelphia firefighters' union is accusing Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers of criminal perjury.

It's the latest salvo in a bitter dispute over promotions within the department.

The sides are arguing over whether the fire commissioner must promote based on a promotional exam or if he can pick and choose.

A court has ruled the commissioner can make the call, and 14 promoted fire fighters are going back to lower-ranking jobs.

On Friday, leadership of the International Association of Firefighters Local 22 accused Ayers of lying under oath in a September court hearing.

"He gets what he wanted, and that was to demote the 14 members. So -- and that's what our contention is, that had he given the accurate information, the judge would have ruled that it was improper to now demote these members," Union President Joe Schulle said.

The union alleges Ayers lied about the date of interviews and promotions of the 14 firefighters.

Ayers declined comment.

The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office says it has received a request by the union to investigate.
