Taking On Sex Traffickers: People March In Protest

Posted: Updated:
Compton, CA -

"Our children are not for sale". Over a hundred people echoing those words, as they marched down a strip of Long Beach Blvd. well known for prostitution. Specifically, the sexual trafficking of minors, which has become a big money maker for gangs.

Politicians from Compton and Lynwood, along with LA county officials joined the many residents and advocates who were ready to walk, rain or not. Luckily, there was never more than a light drizzle.

"We need to do this" said one long time resident who says she is used to seeing girls in their early teens walking the boulevard, with handlers and pimps nearby, "to make sure they don't run away"

According to the FBI, tens of thousand of children are sold for sex in the US, a good three thousand of them coming from L.A.

"This is not child prostitution" says la county supervisor mark Ridley-Thomas, joined by LA county sheriff Lee Baca. Both have been very involved with efforts to deal with the problem locally, adding that no child chooses to prostitute herself, "these are victims of sexual abuse".

Both are working on legislature to make the clients who pay for minors, be considered sex offenders, if prosecuted.
