Plans move forward for toll lanes in Cobb, Cherokee counties

Posted: Updated:

Plans are moving forward for the most expensive road project in state history. U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced details Thursday on a federally-subsidized loan to build toll lanes in Cobb and Cherokee counties.

The Northwest Corridor toll lane project promises to dramatically cut commute times for those willing to pay.

Plans call for 30 miles of barrier separated reversible toll lanes on Interstate 75 and I-575 in Cobb and Cherokee counties.

The project carries a $840 million price tag. Part of that cost is to be covered by a federally-subsidized loan. Fox confirmed that the loan would go through.

"It's my great pleasure to announce today that the Northwest Corridor project will receive a $275 million loan from the Department of Transportation to meet the overall cost of the project," Foxx said.

The proposed new Braves stadium will be located near I-285 at the southern end of the toll lane project.

Cobb County  Commission Chairman Tim Lee predicted that the toll lanes would ease the commute for fans, as well as other drivers.

"By the way, there is only about 30 games a year that occur during the weekday," Lee said. "So in the periods, folks that do not want to be part of the transportation that is coming and going into the game, they can get on the manage lanes and scoot by without interruption so that will be great.

These toll lanes are to be completed one year after the new Braves' stadium opens.  The team plans for the stadium to be ready for the 2017 season.
