Jenni Rivera Still In The Headlines

It is official. The relatives of the passengers killed in the plane crash along with "La Diva de la Banda,"  Jenni Rivera, will be allowed to sue Starwood Management Inc. and Jenni Rivera Enterprises Inc. in California and not Mexico as the Learjet company had hoped.

Rivera, four members of her entourage, and two pilots died last December when the plane taking them from Monterrey to Mexico City crashed in the mountains of northern Mexico.  The operators of the downed Learjet, Starwood, argued that the case should be heard in Mexico because the plane's records are in that country, but Starwood is a Nevada-based company.

It is not surprising to me that Jenni continues to be in the headlines; her life had the makings of a telenovela. Jenni was a local girl, born and raised in Long Beach.  She became pregnant at 15 with the first of five children. She later married her high school sweetheart, José Trinidad Marín.  Jenni called it quits when she discovered that Marín had molested their two daughters and Jenni's younger sister.  Marín is in jail, convicted of sexual assault and rape.  Jenni and her second husband, Juan López, had two children, a son and a daughter.  After their divorce, he was convicted of drug-dealing and died while serving his conviction.  Jenni married baseball player Esteban Loaiza in a fairytale wedding in 2010.  The couple filed for divorce amid rumors of an affair between Loaiza and Jenni's eldest "Chiquis."  Now it seems that the soap opera is destined to continue in court.

I had the opportunity to meet Jenni briefly once and was pleasantly surprised to find that she was warm and down to earth.  She was the real Jenni from the block.  I was not necessarily a fan of her music, but I was a fan of everything she accomplished.  This was a girl from the hood who did not let the many hurdles that life threw at her slow her down. She died just as her career was peaking. She managed to become the queen of the "grupero" music scene in a world where, before her, there had only been kings.  I am not sure if it is common knowledge just how hard it is to be a woman and dominate in the male-dominated Mexican regional music scene.  Jenni saw every challenge as her next goal.  Beyond music, she produced two reality television programs and had dreams of becoming the next Oprah.  I have no doubt, if she had had more time, she would have made that dream a reality.

The next time you hear the name Jenni Rivera, I hope you will think of a local girl who did good, despite all the odds
