A lot of people like to escape the cold winters by heading to Florida. These days a different type of creature is calling Florida home. The green anaconda has invaded the Everglades.

Mostly likely starting as a pet set free, these large snakes are thriving in the grassy warm waters of the Florida Everglades. Who wouldn't like to swim around in sheltered warm waters full of food? There have been pythons discovered in the everglades for years and although they thrive in the warm environment, they do have some natural enemies, such as swarms of fire ants, alligators and even humans. The pythons are usually stung to death by swarms of fire ants while staying put to guard their eggs.

The green anaconda gives birth to live young and this allows the snakes to be mobile and free to flee. That, and the fact that they're huge, will deter most swamp creatures from going after them.

Recent captures of small green anacondas point to the probability that a breeding community of the snakes already exists in the Everglades. Imagine a greenish –brown snake the as big around as a hula hoop slithering through the waters of this popular Florida State Park. Thank goodness they are non-venomous.
