Piloxing: Pilates-kickboxing hybrid workout

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A hot new workout called piloxing has women flocking to Ellen's Fitness Studio in Plainview, Long Island.

Piloxing is a mixture of kickboxing and Pilates. Believe me it is pretty intense, and weighted gloves make it even more difficult.

"When you punch it adds more weight, which adds more cardio, which adds more strength so you're toning your arms," says Ellen Nalaboff of Ellen's Fitness Studio. She brought piloxing to her studio after the workout gained popularity in L.A.

"Sometimes people can't stay two hours in a row and do the cardio class and then the Pilates, so piloxing was a natural to do this," she says.

Besides the convenience of the class, members say it is life changing. Michele Zeplin says piloxing helped her heal after her double mastectomy.

"Piloxing built up my strength," she says. "I never had the swelling. I never had any discomfort after all that surgery because of the fitness aspect."

A piloxing class lasts about an hour and costs $30.

"You have to move you have to keep your core tight… you have to be in really good shape to be doing this class," one student said.

You can contact Ellen's Pilates and Fitness Studio at (516) 396-4521.

Federal authorities say seven Long Island restaurants have agreed to pay nearly $1.7 million in back wages to 363 waiters and kitchen workers. The U.S. Labor Department says the restaurants - six in Suffolk and one in Nassau - were accused of paying workers below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. They also were accused of paying employees off the books, failing to pay time and a half for overtime and other violations.
