MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A fire at an apartment building in south Minneapolis forced a dozen people to vacate their homes early Wednesday morning.

The fire started around 1 a.m. on the 3400 block of Portland Avenue South. The fire was burning in the walls and made it difficult for crews to get it under control. Everyone inside made it out safely, but Minneapolis fire crews believe the complex may be a total loss.

The American Red Cross was called to assist 9 adults and 6 children. One firefighter was taken to HCMC for heat exhaustion treatment.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
