Snow Chances Thursday Night and Arctic Blast set for Saturday

Posted: Updated:

Looks like we are going to end November on the typical cold note as an arctic blast will follow some areas of light snow on Thursday night. It will all start with a cold front that rolls through the area late Wednesday which could spark a few light rain showers during the day. Then we cool off enough to get some areas of snow Thursday night. Does NOT look like a large system, but some casual light snow looks pretty likely across southern and parts of central Minnesota. So how much are we talking?? Well here is what our preliminary numbers are showing according to the Weather Prediction Center (WPC)

This map shows the probability of getting 2 or more inches of snow between now and Friday night. The highest probabilities go through the I-90 corridor in southern Minnesota… but they aren't all that high at the moment generally 40 or 50 percent. This just means that high amounts of snow are NOT likely, but there is a fair amount of uncertainty where this band of snow will end up, or if it even develops at all.

After the snow falls, a BIG cool down can be expected to encompass your weekend. Just to give you an idea of how cold this air really is, just look at this map of the forecast 850mb (5000 feet above ground level) temperatures for Saturday morning.

Look how cold that looks! This is true Arctic air surging southeastward from Alaska and NW Canada. And remember that cold air sinks because it is denser than warmer air, so the temperatures at the surface will be even colder than at 5000 feet. Yikes!!!

Looking for a preview? Well here ya go… A HUGE game between the Gophers and Badgers will be played on Saturday and it will be the coldest home game since the Gophers moved out of the dome.

The only optimistic thing I can show you is that sunshine will be found, but temperatures will be hovering in the teens with wind chills on either side of zero. Ouch! STAY WARM!!!
