5 reasons to use balsam instead of spruce tips this year

Posted: Updated:

Spruce tips are truly the pinnacle of winter decorating. Dale K. shows you a brand new type of green tip on the market to "spruce" things up in your planter this season.

The balsam fir from Nova Scotia, however, is the be-all-end-all when it comes to holiday aroma and festive decorating.

The balsam tips you can buy at your local garden shop typically come in bundles of 15, whereas other types of tips come in 10s – that's more bang for your buck!

Balsam tips are also wider than spruce tips, so depending on your design, you may not need to use as many. That means you can create another planter without having to purchase any more greens!

In addition, they're sturdy and won't blow over in the breeze as easily as a spruce tip. The cut branches will do well without water, but you can water them if you'd like.

Since balsam tips are relatively new to the garden market, they may be hard to find, so call ahead at your local garden shop to ensure they're in stock.

There you have it. Here's a quick recap in case you're not totally convinced to go balsam this year:

1. Comes in bigger bundles
2. Wider branches
3. Sturdy
4. Softer needle, won't poke anyone at your doorstep
5. Fabulous aroma
