Detroit-area police sergeants charged with armed robbery

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Two police sergeants, one from Detroit and one from St. Clair Shores, are facing felony charges after prosecutors say they robbed a man believed to have stolen a cell phone belonging to the daughter of one of the officers. Fox 2 was there as they were arraigned Monday in 36th District Court.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office announced charges against Detroit Sgt. David Pomeroy and St. Clair Shores Sgt. Michael Notoriano.

Prosecutors say Notoriano's daughter was robbed of her iPhone at a Detroit gas station on July 20.

They say Pomeroy and Notoriano traced the phone using the "find my phone" feature and confronted three Detroit men at gunpoint the next day. The incident was photographed by a bystander. Initially the men were thought to be "fake cops" posing as real officers. They were off-duty at the time of the incident.

According to the prosecutor's office, Pomeroy took a handgun and the phone and Notoriano took $300 and marijuana before striking one of the men with a gun.

Lawyers for the sergeants tell Fox 2 they are decorated, veteran officers. They call the case a "house of cards" and insist the men will be exonerated.

Both sergeants face armed robbery and other charges. They could face up to life in prison if convicted. Bond was set at $20,000 each and the two were released after posting 10%. They're due back in court in December.

Fox 2's Robin Schwartz reports Notoriano is currently suspended without pay. He has turned in his badge and gun, and the same is expected soon for Pomeroy. Click on the video player to watch her report.
