Southern suburbs rebounding after Sunday's storm

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Storms knocked down seven huge towers carrying a high-tension Com Ed power line in southern Will County. The downed lines closed roads creating trouble for families all across the area.

The Campbell Family fired up their generator tonight.

Their house remained darkened, but they said the generator would at least run the hot water heater and a sump pump to prevent flooding in the wake of today's scary storm.

"We were following the storm on TV, and then the power went out. That's when we ran to the basement," said Joan Campbell, the man of the house.

In South Suburban Harvey, several semi-tractor trailers overturned, one ending up on top of a recreational vehicle. Winds also ripped the roof off an apartment building, terrifying the residents.

A Com Ed worker told us the giant towers hold up more than a mile of high-tension power cables east of the village of Manhattan, IL. Residents said other damage seemed relatively minor.

"I saw roofs torn off out-buildings such as barns, sheds, but no one was hurt," said resident John Kiefner.

Despite the problems they face tonight, residents of Will County consider themselves lucky, bearing in mind the devastation and even death in other parts of Illinois.
