Leonid Meteor Shower Peaks over the Weekend

Posted: Updated:

The annual meteor shower that occurs every November is coming to a sky near you. The Leonid meteor shower is one of the best and brightest showers of the year. Named because the shooting stars appear to be coming from the constellation Leo in the east, however these are typically bright enough to see streaking all the way across the sky. But this year will be tough for viewing for a few reasons. First off, skies will be far from clear the next two nights with plenty of cloud cover expected Saturday night and clouds will likely hold on for much of Sunday night as well… although some overnight clearing does look likely, especially in the west. Also, there is a full moon over the weekend (called the beaver moon) which will add light pollution to the atmosphere making all but the brightest meteors impossible to see. But if you still want to check out the show, don't let me stop you. Best viewing conditions will be as far away from city lights as possible and from the hours of 1-6am both Saturday and Sunday nights. Expect 10-20 streaks per hour depending on the night and location of choice. Good luck!!
