By Mike Leslie, Sports Anchor/Digital Journalist -
Charlotte, NC -
Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe DeLamielleure was one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL during the 1970s and '80s.
Now, he's battling brain disease. DeLamielleure has been diagnosed as showing signs of CTE - Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.
And he says the NFL
him to die.
He says the NFL wants him to take further tests, beyond the ones he's already undergone, to prove whether he has CTE. He says that's unnecessary.
"They're delaying right now," DeLamielleure says. He argues the NFL will take the position that they are blameless regarding his brain injuries.
"And then they hope you die," he said. "Because then you're gone. And I'm not going to do that. I'm standing up right now for all the guys who can't stand up for themselves."
Greg Aiello, an NFL spokesperson strongly disagrees with that statement.
"It is sad that he feels that way," he said. "But nothing could be further from the truth."
DeLamielleure wants the NFL to give him and his family health care. He says they do not provide that, right now.
"Health care. Commissioner," DeLamielleure pleads. "I've said it a hundred times. We can't get health insurance? Our wives have to work, at 62, for my insurance? My wife didn't sign up for this."
DeLamielleure does say he thinks the NFL has made today's game safer. But he wants the league to take care of the veterans. Especially those who played before 1993.
