Staten Island Ferry boat mechanical failure

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Staten Island Ferry boat had a mechanical failure after leaving the terminal in Manhattan heading to Staten Island Thursday afternoon, according to officials. The boat turned around and returned to Manhattan, where it had a hard landing at the dock.

As it docked at Whitehall Terminal, crew members told passengers to brace for impact, according to reports. Passengers reported that the boat felt like it hit the dock harder than usual.

"Today, there was a hard landing on the 2PM Staten Island Ferry from Whitehall," The Department of Transportation, which runs the ferry, said in a Tweet. "There are no injuries and there is no damage to the boat."

The Fire Department said it responded to an emergency call at about 3:10 p.m. and confirmed that the ferry had bumped into the dock. The FDNY confirmed that no one was hurt.

The Coast Guard initially responded, but later said that it was no longer investigating.

The DOT said commuters could expect a modified schedule for the evening rush hour with boats every 20 minutes.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
