First Obamacare Numbers; California Leads, But Total is Far Below Projections

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11) Health and Human Services released its first enrollment numbers for the Affordable Care Act. Just over 106,000 people signed up for healthcare insurance.  That's about a fifth of the Obama administration's projection.

In California, the numbers were much more encouraging.  More than 200,000 applications were submitted to date, almost half, 97,000 completed enrollment.  Those policies effectively cover about 370,000 people.  How did California enroll more than three times the number on  www.healthcare.gov ?  Covered California's Dana Howard admits he's not aware how the feds set up its website, but he does credit political will for the success of www.CoveredCa.com.

He said, the state started working on its healthcare marketplace site as soon as the ACA passed.  He theorizes that federal site was hampered by the states that were against the ACA.  He blames those sites for hurting not helping the process of getting www.healthcare.gov up and running.  That being said, on Capitol Hill, there were two hearings to dissect the issues on the federal website.  Rep. Darryl Issa R-San Diego is the chairman of the House Oversight committee.  He upbraided the top administration technology officials both for not accommodating the promised 60 thousand concurrent users and for lax security.

He said that insufficient security may have already exposed the website users to hackers.  But then in another hearing, before the House Homeland Security committee, Homeland Security's Roberta Stempfley testified that there'd been only one open  sourced action attempting to perpetrate a denial of service attack against the healthcare.gov site that has been unsuccessful.
