Police: Officer shooting in response to increase security

ATLANTA -

City leaders and law enforcement vow to turn up the heat in an Atlanta community after the shooting of an off-duty police officer this weekend.

The officer was working security at the Edgewood Court Apartments on Hardee Street when he was ambushed by a gunman carrying a shotgun.

Residents of the 204-unit complex in northeast Atlanta say they are under siege. They say they have a witnessed a spike in crime in recent weeks that escalated into the shooting of an off-duty officer on Saturday.

The property owner joined police and community leaders during a press conference on Wednesday to address the issue.

Major Timothy Peek with the Atlanta Police Department said they have been working with the Russell Property Management Company to respond to the neighbors' concerns.

Peek believes the shooting on Saturday may have been in response to the efforts to increase police presence, but say the department will continue its concentrated efforts in the area. The property owner says they have also hired a security consultant to help work with police.

The wounded officer is recovering from his injuries.

There is a $5,000 reward being offered for information on the officer's shooting.
