Money Saving Holiday Travel Tips

Posted: Updated:

Travel expert Tracy O'Connor was here, and she says, it's not too late to get a good price on travel…even for Thanksgiving!

Money Saving Holiday Travel Tips:

1) THANKSGIVING TRAVEL TIP:  Book your airline departure date for the actual day of Thanksgiving … Demand is down on that day, so prices are too - you'll get a much better rate… and still be there in time to cut the turkey (or to-furkey).
2) CHOOSE OFF SEASON DESTINATIONS:  Again, lower demand = Lower rates, fewer crowds and more savings!
3) LOCAL-LIZE IT!:  We all know airfare can be expensive, with all the hidden fees - so Road-trip-it!  Not only do you save on air-travel, but you can also save by pre-buying and packing all kinds of necessities (rather than buying them at resort prices), like snack foods and alcohol. And - you can split the gas money.  Where to go?

TRACY'S LOCAL-LIZE IT PICK:  MAMMOTH MOUTAIN!

  • Lots going on for Holiday, including the festival of lights, NYE parties, etc.
  • Get ski gear locally before you drive out and you'll save up to 30% off resort rental prices (where you pay a lot extra for convenience).
  • Mammoth Mountain Inn has great Thanksgiving and Holiday offers!

4) LOOKOUT FOR CYBER MONDAY TRAVEL E-DEALS:  Keep your eyes peeled and your fingertips poised to pounce on all the incredible one-day Internet travel deals airlines and hotels will be posting around Cyber Monday (this year, December 2, 2013.) Where to go?

TRACY'S CYBER MONDAY PICK:  SAN FRANCISCO

  • San Fran is one of my favorite festive Holiday destinations.  The tree and ice rink are up Union Square!  Bay lights exhibit is still going - and there is a lot of Holiday activity.
  • Starting online November 25th and going through December 6th - you can get 20-40% on over 500 participating Starwood properties in North and South America (including brands Westin, Sheraton, W, Le Meridien and more).  San Fran properties include:  Westin San Francisco Marketplace, W Downtown, St. Regis. Visit Starwood Online:  on November 25th through December 6th for more details.  Deals will begin in December and extend through April.
  • Also, check out the promotion 49 Hours In SF Hotel Deals, in which you can save 25% on participating hotels and look into the CityPASS.  SF is only one of 10 cities in the U.S to have the SF CityPASS - a featured attractions booklet - which offers 50% savings on transportation, cable cars, museums, bay tours and more.
  • Finally - both Southwest and JetBlue fly to SF, have tons of flights and are the only two remaining carries that don't charge baggage fees -- so a whole family can save hundreds of $$ just on those alone!

5) CHOOSE US DOLLAR-STRETCHER DESTINATIONS!: If you are planning an international trip, airfare can be expensive, so go to a destination where once you are there - you can really stretch a dollar! Your dollar won't go far in Tokyo, but in Argentina, Iceland or in South East Asia - it will!

TRACY'S DOLLAR-STRETCHER PICK:  BALI!

High season just finished… so rates are going down and the dollar goes far! You will become a millionaire in Balinese Rupiah. Get a full time driver for $40 bucks a day and tour the island in style.

  • Visit the monkey forest, the rice terraces of Ubud, the temples, the famous waves of Uluwatu.
  • It's a stunning destination for all, but especially good for couples and singles looking for a happening Holiday or to start the New Year off with a splash of fun in the sun, surf and sand.
  • Great for holiday, with time-off to travel and lots of glittering parties going on for New Year's too, those who stay at the W, get into their exclusive, coveted NYE party for free.
  • After doing research = Airbnb.com (a peer to peer website where homeowners rent rooms or their entire property) is offering GREAT savings and incredible value on homestays and villas in Bali. The average savings is about 40 50% over hotel stays.  Lots of fantastic options all over Bali.
