Grandfather survives after being shot several times

Posted: Updated:

An Atlanta grandfather is thankful to be alive after he was shot several times in front of his southwest Atlanta home.

Marcus Hawkins was struck three times in the stomach, once in the buttocks and in the arm while sitting on his front porch on Aug. 30. Hawkins and another man were outside drinking a beer when the ambushed occurred.

"Two guys come over my left shoulder, like give it up," Hawkins said.
Hawkins says the gunmen followed him when he ran into the house toward the backyard, stumbled, got up and started running again.
"He kind of pushed me and I fell back and I was just laying on my back just staring up at space while he was just shooting," said Hawkins.
Hawkins said the gunmen fled after they failed to rob him. He spent six days in the hospital and is now recovering at a new home.

Atlanta police said they don't have any substantial leads or suspects in the shooting.  Hawkins thinks someone who knew him targeted him.

Hawkins said that he believes there's a reason he survived.
"When I think about if I had passed and my grandchildren had to grow up knowing what happened to their grandfather, it kind of made me emotional," Hawkins said.
Hawkins has four grandchildren and two grown children. He also recently married his fiancé who was with him the night of the shooting. He hopes police catch his attackers before someone else gets hurt or worse.
"I was lucky to be alive or blessed to be alive. The next person they do they might not make it," Hawkins said.
Atlanta police are asking anyone with information call CrimeStoppers at 404-577-TIPS. A reward of up to $2,000 could be involved.
