October Ends Cooler than Average for the Lower 48

Posted: Updated:

Overall, it's been a pretty warm year for the US, but October actually came in a bit below average with the cold snap to round out the month responsible for the downward trend in temperatures. A couple cold fronts late in the month dropped temperatures across much of the country some 10 to 30 degrees sending overall numbers a few ticks below what is considered normal. It was also a pretty wet month for many parts of the country including right here in Minnesota. The state to state breakdown shows that Oregon saw the coldest temperatures as compared to average while Delaware saw the warmest. Minnesota was actually near normal for the month but the western half of the state came in slightly cooler. The great part of October was it was wetter than average… same goes for much of the region with on of the wettest Octobers on record for the Dakotas, Wyoming, and Nebraska. This has helped drought conditions across the region, but unfortunately not enough to get us completely out of our moderate to severe drought. The summary of temperatures, precipitation, and big events can be seen in the pictures below.
