ACC/AHA release new guidelines to prevent cardiovascular risk

It's estimated 82 percent of heart disease is preventable with a lifestyle change. The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology have released new guidelines to help you achieve that healthy change.

Dr. Pam Marcovitz, a Beaumont cardiologist, outlines the biggest changes in the guidelines seen in cholesterol-lowering drugs, exercise and diet.

Highlights:

+ More people will be allowed to begin taking cholesterol-lowering drugs, including all Type-2 Diabetics between the ages of 40 and 75.

+ 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intense exercise is recommended three to four times a week.

+ The guidelines stress the importance of a heart-healthy diet that is low in saturated fats, Trans fats, and sodium, and high in fruits, vegetables and legumes.
