It's estimated 82 percent of heart disease is preventable with a lifestyle change. The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology have released new guidelines to help you achieve that healthy change.

Dr. Pam Marcovitz, a Beaumont cardiologist, outlines the biggest changes in the guidelines seen in cholesterol-lowering drugs, exercise and diet.

Highlights:

+ More people will be allowed to begin taking cholesterol-lowering drugs, including all Type-2 Diabetics between the ages of 40 and 75.

+ 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intense exercise is recommended three to four times a week.

+ The guidelines stress the importance of a heart-healthy diet that is low in saturated fats, Trans fats, and sodium, and high in fruits, vegetables and legumes.

The full report, "Guidelines on the Assessment of Cardiovascular Risk" is available online. It will be available in future print issues of the journal of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association Journal, circulation.
