Man `drowning` in Lake Michigan turns out to be kite surfer

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Rescuers responding to calls of a man drowning in Lake Michigan rushed to the shoreline Monday afternoon only to find a kite surfer taking advantage of windy conditions.

"We get these calls all the time," Chicago Police Marine Unit Officer Chris Pinzine told the Sun-Times, explaining that winter surfers are often mistaken for people in distress.

A boat and a squad car sped to 57th Street about 4 p.m. The squad got there first, and the kite surfer told the police he was doing just fine.

Winter surfing is legal at several city beaches, including 57th Street.
