Dash-cam video shows trooper, suspect fall from highway overpass after chase

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -- A Michigan State Trooper was injured when he and the suspect he was chasing fell off a highway overpass.

Dash-cam video released Monday shows the suspect already leaning over the guard rail when the officer tries to grab him and both go over the guardrail.

The chase began after the trooper tried to pull over a vehicle for defective equipment on Interstate 675. The suspect refused to pull over, sparking the chase, according to Michigan State Police. MLive.com reports "stop sticks" were used to stop the vehicle on the overpass.

Both men fell 25 to 35 feet. "You never know what's going to happen," said Chief Don Pussehl. "There was not a lot a lot of time to think it through. It was more just reactionary in nature."

The trooper suffered a back injury and was released from the hospital last week. H e is on paid leave and recovering at home.

The suspect, a 41-year-old Standish man, was on a tether out of Bay County for alcohol-related charges. He suffered a broken leg and wrist and remains in custody.
