Local Woman Hopes For Family's Survival

Posted: Updated:

A local woman is glued to the pictures coming out of the Philippines hoping her family survived.

It was last Thursday since Fae Opdyke last spoke with her family in the Philippines. Her entire family-her mother, brother nieces and nephews live in the region where the typhoon hit. 4 days later she still has no contact with her family.

"It made me feel so sad that my hometown is basically unrecognizable," Opdyke said

Opdyke hasn't' slept in days spending most of her time on Facebook and Twitter desperately searching for any signs of her entire family--including her 85-year -old mother.

"I'm saying please help me find my family," Opdyke said.

Her family lives Tacloban, the island region hit hardest by the typhoon. Thousands are estimated dead.

"There's no electricity for people there. How are people going to go there. Nothing," Opdyke said.

She's called the Red Cross both here and the Philippines but still not a single word from her family. She's trying not to think the worst.

Opdyke is also worried foreign aid going to the Philippines isn't getting to the people who need it most. She says she'll continue to wait by the phone and email for any news from home.

"I pray a lot. I know god is good and he won't' allow my family to have that kind of end," Opdyke said.

The Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter has opened up a 24-hour family tracing hotline for people to track loved ones at 215-299-4889.
