Joe Mauer will move from catcher to first base in 2014, the Minnesota Twins announced Tuesday.
In a release, the team cited "inherent risks of future injury at the catcher position" after the all-star suffered through concussion symptoms in 2013. Mauer batted .324 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI in 113 games in 2013. He suffered a concussion on a foul tip off his mask on August 19 and did not return to the Twins line up.
Mauer and Twins general manager Terry Ryan will hold a conference call to discuss the move.
