Filipino-Americans feeling the brunt of typhoon

Posted: Updated:

A neighborhood in Queens known as 'Little Manila' has one of the largest Filipino populations in the United States.  The residents here say they don't know if their family and friends in the Philippines are dead or alive

Silverio Lendero who works at Phil Am foods, a Filipino grocery store says he hasn’t heard from his family in the Philippines at all.

Every hour on the hour he is calling home to his wife and daughter hoping and praying that this time, he'll get through..

"I don’t have any communication with them since last 3 weeks ago" He said. “I’m searching on the internet but nothing; I have no idea where they are now.”

Grace Cajelas, another resident, lost contact with her sister a few days ago.

“We've been praying for them” she said. “I already cried.”

Grace is sending money and a package hoping by some miracle her family receives it. She has no idea where they are.

Grace said that her family told her that the roof of our house was blown off by the wind

It's estimated that the typhoon affected more than four million people living in the central Philippines..

Community leaders said that they haven't coordinated any local relief efforts yet because they're still waiting for communication lines to open back up again.

With communication lines down, residents say all they can really do now is just wait.
