Official Cause Of Villas Home Explosion Released

Posted: Updated:
LOWER TWP., N.J. -

An official cause has been released in the explosion that leveled a home Thursday at the Jersey Shore.

FOX 29's Kelly Hessedal reported Friday night that she spoke by phone with the Lower Township police chief, who said it was a leak in a propane tank line that caused this explosion. The propane tank that was the source of the leak was located underneath the home.

It's unclear what caused the leak, although officials say they'll be looking into recent renovations that were being done on the house.

Cell phone video shot by neighbors captured the chaos before the fire department even arrived. Flames tore through the Villas home of 67-year-old Evelyn and Jim McCarty moments after their home exploded.

The blast shook the entire neighborhood.

Resident James Poulter, 21, was one of several who risked their own lives to step in to help. He said that as others held up the roof, he and a friend helped pull out Jim McCarty, who had been in the shower located toward the back of the home.

Fortunately, other neighbors had already pulled Evelyn to safety. She was found in a pile of rubble near the front of the home.

On Friday, several agencies, including the ATF, sifted through the aftermath.

Cape May County Fire Marshal Connie Johnson said that, in his 37 years with the department, this was some of the worst destruction he's ever seen.

But the couple's American flag remains standing.

We're told the McCartys remain in critical at the Crozier Chester Burn Center. Jim was burned from the waist down, while Evelyn suffered two broken legs.

Poulter said he was grateful to hear the two residents are expected to survive.

Hessedal has more details in this video report.
